Step by Step Micro Viv False Bottom

5 1/2 Gallon False Bottom Viv, made to be viewed on end

The false bottom in this viv is constructed using PVC pipe (cut to sit flat), flourescent light egg crating, and screen.  The PVC piping is cut to a heighth desired for water to be, then the egg crating is set on top of it, in this case the egg crating was cut on one end to allow an open water area, screen is used to help keep materials such as potting mix from falling through to the water.  Gravel is layed on top of the screen to keep the potting mix from moving through the screen, then the potting mix is put on top, and plants, and moss are added.

The plants used in this viv are dwarf mondo grass (not really a grass at all, and can be found in the aquatic plants section of a pet store), collected moss, and a collected creeping vine found near a river.  Also there is a creeping vine that was used in the back corner, and middle of the land section, however it did not do well over time.
The gravel was Estes (prerinsed, makes life easier), it was layed in about a half an inch thick, the rock was river rock, and had a black looking algae growing on it from being in a fish tank, I have found that the algae has worked as something for the moss to tap into to grow over the rock, and seems to have sped up its growth over the rock.
